How does human movement create patterns and centers of activity

People tend to follow natural resources/climates and typically exhaust the resources wherever they settle before moving on to a new place. The centers of activity were mostly centered around a body of water in earlier times but today, they are probably centered around large urban areas with factories and businesses.
