Why were the events at dunkirk memorable in military history?

    If the evacuation of Dunkirk had not been successful, it is very likely that the shape of the conflict of World War II would have been very different. Hitler's forces had the British Army trapped, and were the evacuation not successful, they would have been massacred on the beach, allowing for Germany to easily invade Britain and change the entire dynamic of the battle lines.
