During the Woodland period (approx. 1000 BC to 700 AD), Native Americans began using new methods of food production, using bow and arrow for hunting and developing agriculture, to allow for larger populations to gather in a smaller area. This led to the formation of larger tribes, and eventually to the development of larger villages and even walled fortifications.
