    Malinke people created an empire in the West Africa in the early 13th century. The base of their economy was agriculture and gold trade. After that they created Mali Empire (1230 - 1340). Mali Empire expanded to control Trans-Saharan trade routes. Islam was adopted as religion of the Empire. This was the first Muslim Empire in sub-Saharan Africa.
