Farmers were tired of working long hours.

The Farmer's Alliance contained many small family farmers and farm hands who were exploited by the wealthiest of the American economy. Farm workers and industrial workers both wanted controls in place to prevent exploitation of their labor. The 8 hour work day became a shared desire of all laborers and would become part of the Populist Party platform.
