Explain why there was so much resentment towards the "new immigrants "

During the 1980s, the American people expressed so much hate for the "new immigrants" since they are threatened that the English language will be overruled by the new minorities who are coming. During that period, it was the first time that they would cater immigrants from non-European countries and they believe that they couldn't cater such people.
