What was different about toy story (1995) and virtually all of its animated film predecessors?

Toy Story was a groundbreaking creation from Pixar in that it was the first feature length film to prove that computer generated animation was a viable medium for both story and art which was capable of capturing the interest of not only children, but also adults.
