How did the Three-Fifths Compromise satisfy the North and South tensions over slavery?

The South wanted to use their slave population to increase their representation in the House of Representatives. The North did not want to allow this because it would in turn decrease their representation. Because delegates at the National Convention were at an impasse, they decided that each slave would count as three-fifths of a free person for representation.
