They wanted to provide education for all, including African-Americans. They also wanted to build railroads and go further westwards and make new states. They wanted to build roads to connect new cities that grew and they wanted to provide healthcare for people. The results were not good because the long depression came and money was lost and there was nothing to invest or to support.
