Nationalism--rising ideas of nationalism made peoples of the same ethnic origins to have one country.

The Germany people were broken into varying states in Europe. The 1848 revolutions were about being united as a cultural group or nation. This nationalism meant many people wanted their country to be only of the same people (nation-state). For Germany this meant bringing together the German people under one government.
