The middle colonies contained the large port cities of New York City and Philadelphia, both on the Atlantic Ocean and containing various river ways that made trading goods as well as an influx of settlers vital to its sustainability. The middle colonies contained good agricultural weather, earning the nickname the breadbasket of the colonies, and was the most diverse region in the colonies due to the port cities allowing various settlers into the colonies.
