Why were gay Americans afraid to "come out of the closet" in the 1950s and early 1960s?

A. They feared organization.

B. They feared discrimination.

C. They feared being arrested.

    During this time in history, gays and lesbians were discriminated and arrested by the government and people. Being gay or lesbian was once labeled a mental issue. Even during one of the world wars when the American forces were trying to figure out German transmissions, a gay scientist was put in jail even after figuring out German transmissions.

    It could be either B or C. But it's more likely B since not many were arrested.
