There were several factors for the rise of independent movements in Africa after World War 1.

First, some Africans were educated from Christian and Muslim schools, thus the exposure to Western political ideas which emphasized natural rights greatly influenced an African elite who identifIied the need for independence for African countries.

African elites created African Movemements to defend the interests of Africans and after participation in world war 1 returned home with radical ideas that favored liberation.
