John Brown as an abolitionist known for using violent measures in order to show his displeasure with the institution of slavery. Brown tried to organize a slave uprising in1859 when raiding Harper's Ferry. Harper's Ferry was a federal arsenal, holding a significant amount of guns and ammunition. This uprising was squashed and John Brown was executed for his participation in organizing this event.

Even though they had many differences, one similarity between John Brown and Abraham Lincoln was they both knew that the issue of slavery in America needed to be solved. Before John Brown was executed, he discussed how the issue of slavery will only be solved by bloodshed. In his famous house divided speech, Lincoln discusses how the US cannot exist as half free and half slave.
