Why did John Brown's raid on Harpers Ferry fail?

    Brown did not have the full support of the north. While the abolitionist movement had grown largely in the 1850s, abolitionists were not yet ready to support a full scale slave revolt. Incidentally, Frederick Douglass opposed Brown's plan.
