    In the time when Route 66 started getting used, cars were still relatively new and they broke down all the time. This enabled for car shops and spare part stores to thrive because people would stop and repair their cars, as well as get gas. Manufacturing was not common because nobody actually lived on the route, it was a way to travel, not a place to live.
