The age of science and scientific inquiry, the age of reason-based inquiry the advancement in all areas of human interest. In Edinburgh, Scotland there was a very strong Enlightenment movement including the famous geologist James Hutton, the philosopher David Hume and the economist Adam Smith. They believed that as James Hutton described it in geology "that the present is the key to the past".
