The Restoration was an event in English history that restored monarchy to the British government in 1660. The previous decade marked a period of a brief Republic conducted under Oliver Cromwell until his death in 1658 that involved a strong puritan influence over England. Charles II who was in exile after his father Charles I was executed in 1649, returned to the English following the death of Cromwell to universal praise. The event known as the Restoration is known as such, because it marked the return of monarchy to British politics. This period of Restoration also involved a rise with colonial trade and mercantilism, and a new interest in English literature.
