Why were french explorers interested in claiming the mississippi river and having access to the great lakes?

They needed it because they were mainly fur trappers and traders. The rivers and lakes would enable them to grow their business by moving merchandise and fur around and make it easier to hunt and eventually earn money. They wanted it due to economic reasons.
