The British government taxed without giving the colonies representation or a way to protest the Crown. They gave British soldiers the right to search and even stay in American Colonists' homes without permission. The British government did now allow the American Colonies to negotiate its own free trade agreements, giving Britain an effective monopoly over the colonies' trade.
