The manufacturing industries moved to the suburbs, leading to loss of industrial jobs for many. The people were only able to secure low paying, less stable service jobs. African Americans were forced to live in poor or substandard housing due to housing discrimination. Although middle class African Americans were able to move to the suburbs and better areas, those who were unable to move were forced to stay and suffer deeper poverty and the chance of a better life.
