First Wave Movement (1848-1920) focused on getting the right to vote. The movement began with the Declaration of Sentiments essentially comparing the plight of women to that of men before the Revolution. The wave ended with women gaining the right to vote through the 19th Amendment.

Second War Movement (1960-1980) focused on ending discrimination against women in education and careers. They fought for the right to divorce, birth control, and full independent ownership of their property even with marriage. They also pushed for an Equal Rights Amendment which failed in 1982 but they were able to accomplish rights through the Civil Rights Act.
