The Twelve Tables, the first written laws, were said to be created due to the long struggle and fights between the patricians and plebeians. The main complaint was about how only patricians could rise to the position of magistrate. This effectively blocked many men from rising up to higher positions all because of family that they were born to. This led them to set up the 12 Tables and begin forming the Republic style government that we often associate with them, prior to the Rise of the Emperors.
