The Lost Generation of writers were cynical of the governments responsible for World War I. They criticized the greed of governments which led to the devastating effects of war. The wrote books about what they or soldiers saw on the battlefield to include the trench warfare, shell shock, and brutality of the war.

They also criticized the "roaring" party nature of the 1920s. Fitzgerald in particular wrote about the emptiness of consumerism and the party atmosphere of the 1920s. These writers were almost frustrated with the free-spirited nature of people following such a devastating event.
