General Douglas MacArthur was noted for having led US ground forces in an "island-hopping" campaign.

The size of the Pacific Ocean is difficult to understand. A vast body of water that stretches from Asia and Oceania (Australia, New Zealand and a large number of Pacific Island Nations) to North and South America.

The surprise attack by the Japanese in 1941 on Pearl Harbor in Hawaii, ensured the United States' involvement in World War II. The difficulty with returning the attack on the Japanese, was the immense amount of water between America and Japan.

General Douglas MacArthur is credited with leading the campaign of "island hopping". Some of the deadliest fighting occurred on relatively small islands scattered through the Pacific and led ever closer to the Japanese homeland.

In order to maintain supply lines, house troops, supply reinforcements and basically allow the military machine to function in a more orderly fashion, as well as advance, MacArthur knew that he would need to connect the army this through the "island hopping".

Through this strategy, the army tried pursue easier targets that could be easily won, but of course sometimes encountered fierce resistance from Japanese troops, like in the battle for Tarawa.

Of course after the dropping of the atomic bombs on Japan 1945, the war front in the Asian theater quickly ended, but what allowed this to be possible was the advance that had been made under MacArthur's "island hopping" strategy. In fact, the bombs that were dropped had flown out of Tinian island, another small island in the collection of the island of the Pacific.
