How have religous beliefs/practices reinforced existing social structures?

    Because religions usually require you to act in a certain way. Depending on the religion, you will most probably get punished for not doing what it says. This causes people to fear punishment and so they follow certain social structures and stuff in order to live in peace without fearing punishment
