What was a likely motivation to send colonists to Australia in the first place?

    Britain wanted to colonize Australia because it was an empty continent that Britain could inhabit or live in without any opposition from local people. Because Australia did not have any infrastructure and was considered "wild" Britain decided that it would be a "Penal Colony" and they would send their criminals and undesirables there.
