In 1903 - with economic and some degree of military support from the United States - Panama declared its independence from Columbia. The revolution was engineered by a Panamanian political and financial faction backed by the Panama Canal Company, a French-U. S. corporation that intended to connect the Atlantic and Pacific oceans with a waterway across the Isthmus of Panama.
