The Atlantic Charter called for self-government.

The leaders of Great Britain and the United States signed the Atlantic Charter on August 14, 1941, and the other members of the Allies of World War II later signed on as well. The charter stated the goals of the war - - to end nations grabbing the territory of other nations, self-determination of peoples concerning their governments and restoring self-government to those who had been deprived of it. A number of African leaders met in Bloemfontein, South Africa, in December, 1943, to discuss the implications of the Atlantic Charter for African nations.
