Just before the battle of midway in world war ii, the u. s. submarine trigger ran aground on a reef. the officers were wearing red goggles, so the bright lights inside the submarine wouldn't interfere with their ability to see in the dark ocean. on their maps, the reefs were marked in red. why did they run aground?

I would say that since they were wearing red googles then the red color of the reefs on the maps probably would not be visible so consequently they wouldn't know they were there and would then run the risk of running aground on them.
