In his 2nd term as President of the United States, George Washington set the precedent of Isolationism. At the time, France and Great Britain were going to war, and President Washington was expected to choose a side. However, instead, he decided that the best decision would be to remain neutral. This policy has prevented future U. S. Presidents from going to war. Often, it is in the country's best interest to refrain from going to war.
