Why might Lincoln's policies during the Civil War earn him the title of "tyrant" or "dictator"?

    Lincoln's suspension of the writ of Habeas Corpus meant that he could arrest any individual without justifiable evidence in times of crisis, as he did during the Civil War. Such actions can be seen as the actions of a dictator as he seemed to exude absolute power.
