One way in which African-Americans shaped American culture during the 1920s was the innovative new music known as jazz. These new sounds gave life to the "roarin' twenties" after whites adapted jazz in their own way. African-American visual art and literature also began to change the thinking of Americans in the East. Take Langston Hughes, for example. This poet used art to expose the hardships faced by men and women of color, opening many eyes to social injustice. The Harlem Renaissance, as it's known, paved a new identity for Americans. It was a shout for the black voice to be heard.

In short, African Americans made their voices and talents be seen and heard by Americans nationwide.
