    After the death of Oliver Cromwell (Lord Protector of the Commonwealth of England, Scotland, and Ireland) on 3 September 1658, there was restoration of the Monarchy. Although Cromwell was succeeded as Lord Protector by his son, Richard, Richard resigned in 1659 and in 1660, the English Parliament decided to proclaim Charles king and to invite him to return.
