What was one reason why the Greeks were unable to create a united empire, but instead remained separated into different groups?

    Greece had lots of mountains and valleys, and very indifferent terrain which lead to numerous different groups in different parts of Greece, instead of just one very powerful united empire. Along with this, the Mediterranean caused them to want to explore and branch out and not stay in one place with only one empire.
