A fundamental idea to understand why that era was called the Enlightenment is the notion that human life and society can be improved through rational change. This period produced many books, essays, treaties, new philosophies, wars and revolutions. Enlightenment thinkers questioned the traditional authority and ideas. A whole renovation of thinking in philosophy and sciences was accomplished. It is also called the Age of Reason. Our modernity wouldn't be what it is without the contributions of Enlightenment.
