    Explanation:

    Two US destroyers that were stationed in Gulf of Tonkin were fired upon by the North Vietnamese forces in August 1964, it was known as Gulf of Tonkin incident. In response to this incident President Lyndon B. Johnson sought permission from the US congress to increased the presence of US military in Indochina.

    Gulf of Tonkin Resolution was passed by the Congress on august 7, 1964, it allowed President Johnson to take measures he believed were compulsory to retaliate and maintain international peace and security in the southeast Asia. This resolution was the legal basis for the Nixon and Johnson administration for the prosecution of Vietnam war and escalated the involvement of US military in Vietnam War.
