Mao launched the cultural revolution because he thought the current leaders at that time were taking the communist party and China in the wrong direction. Western culture and civilization were starting to make an impact within society; and Chinese people were starting to see the changes in their everyday life. That is why Mao Zedong started this revolution, to preserve the Chinese communism and all the traditional elements from Chinese society. He wanted to "purge" and eliminate all the capitalist ideas and elements.
