Why was germany's split between protestents in the north and catholics in the south impotant?

    Because the Catholics were frustrated that to many people in half of Germany wanted to be Protestant, and they couldn't really have power over them so they decided to not to expose the South (who they had power over) to the North (protestant) who had more freedom.
