    Nice question.

Political parties are the traditional form of organized social representation of the will or sympathies of large parts of an electorate in modern political systems. They are usually created and operated to gain and keep power, and to rule through that representation. Under a doctrine of separation of powers applied in all democratic systems, parliament is the most important branch of power, and it is usually through membership within a party that parliamentarians enter that body.
