As USA entered into the gilded-age in the late 1870's and the society turned more into an industrialist society, a minor portion of the population, who were industrialists and business owners became extremely wealth and lived lavish life styles.

However, their wealth came at a cost. Many working class people's labor was exploited and the minimum wages, working conditions, health and safety conditions at work were disregarded.

It is because of this poor working conditions met by the workers that more and more people and social activists started to concern more about the Socialism and it values.
