So he used his legitimate power as the Commander of the US Army during the Korean War. He thought that what he was doing was the right thing to do. However, President Harry S. Truman also exerted his legitimate power as Commander-in-chief of the US Armed Forces and eventually decided to relieve McArthur of his duty. Historians and reporters said that it was a battle of egos between the two figures.
