    Republican Abraham Lincoln was a well-known supporter of the abolition of slavery. His predecessor, James Buchanan, tried to appease the southern states and made political concessions to them in order to preserve the unity of the Union. But the election of Lincoln in 1860 was too much for many slavery states, they could not diggest his becoming the next USA president, and some states seceded even before he was sworn in.
