Redistricting is the process of redrawing electoral district boundaries. The main goal of redistricting is to create equal districts with the same number of people and voters who have the same opportunity to participate in the democratic process. The US Supreme Court has ruled that population disparity between districts would violate the Constitution, which means that redistricting is required so the people that live in different districts have the same weight on voting which is the basic principle of democracy.

divide or organize (an area) into new political or school districts. this supports the democratic process by the practice of drawing district boundaries to achieve political advantage for legislators, involves the manipulation of district boundaries to leave out, or include, specific populations in a particular district to ensure a legislator's reelection or to advantage their party.
