    Answer: Valuable land and the Spaniards' mere presence.

    Explanation: southerners wanted land, and lots of it. The Spanish were not actively doing anything in Florida. Most of the time, it had nobody there or there were fleeing Native Americans there. The southerners also felt threatened by the Spaniards' presence. They felt that Florida should belong to the U. S. but it wasn't.
