In general, there are two factors affecting plant growth and development; genetic and environmental. The most important environmental factors that affect a plant's growth are light, temperature, and water (precipitation). Changing any of these can cause the plant stress which stunts or changes growth. The genetic factor is also called internal factor because the basis of plant expression (the gene) is located within the cell.
