NWSA was formed in May 15, 1869 by Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton. The organization was formed following a split in the American Equal Rights Association regarding the view of the 15th Amendment to the United States Constitution. This was intended to abolish slavery and provide the right to vote regardless of skin color. NWSA also wanted to include a letter about gender in the amendment, which was not implemented.
