The colonists chose to declare independence from Great Britain because of all the taxes and events that happened between the colonies/colonists and Britain.

The Stamp Act, Tea Act, the Intolerable Acts and events like the Boston Massacre, Boston Tea Party, led to the independence of the colonists from Great Britain. They were tired of Taxation without Representation.
