The Han dynasty had been a era renowned not just for developments in art and science but also for the geographic expansion that occurred throughout this time. Geography of the Han dynasty was typified by enlargement and a quite complicated system of fiefs and princedoms. The empire was separated into the the Former Han or Western Han and the Later Han or the Eastern Han.

The era marking the extension of the geography of the Han dynasty was during the reign of Emperor Han Wudi. The extension of the empire took place first during the Xiongnu defeat and afterward via the advance of the Chinese armies into Gansu region in North Korea. The extension also included the provinces of Yunnan and Guangzhou, as well as the Modern Vietnam northern region.
