    In the 1930s François-Marie Arouet popularly known Voltaire published a series of letters, about 25 in number, stemming from his experience while living in Britain, praising the British governments toleration and flexibility which was seen as an insult on the French. The French government eventually ordered his arrest in response to the series of letter which condemned the French government. He was writer and historian, famous for his criticism of the French government who advocated for civil liberties.
